Guo Wenqing Meets Papua New Guinea Mining Department Minister Byron Chen and Delegation

On June 20th, China Minmetals Corporation General Manager and MCC Group President and Party Secretary Guo Wenqing met with Papua New Guinea Mining Department Minister Byron Chen and his Papua New Guinea Political Party Delegation at MCC’s Headquarters in Beijing. Both parties held talks in an amiable and friendly atmosphere, exchanging views on supporting the development of the Ramu NiCo Project in Papua New Guinea as soon as possible and further enhancing cooperation in such mineral resources as copper, lead, zinc, nickel, gold and so on, as well as transportation infrastructure and other fields.

Guo Wenqing extended a warm welcome to Minister Byron Chen and his delegation, and pointed out that China and Papua New Guinea have a deep friendship and a good cooperation relationship; the Ramu Nico Project, invested in and built by MCC, has a ratio of reaching the designed capacity of over 90%, provides employment opportunities and promotes local economic development. As one of the earliest Chinese enterprises with the largest investment volume in Papua New Guinea, MCC has gained great support from Madang Province, the Mining Department and other government departments for its development in Papua New Guinea. The Ramu NiCo Project is a beautiful landscape route in the Province, and the Governor of Madang has also spoke highly of the cooperation between China and Papua New Guinea. With its strong technical strength and abundant capital strength, MCC has the confidence to accomplish this project successfully and embody its responsible role as a world-famous enterprise. This project not only stands for the friendship between China and Papua New Guinea, but also a good example of the two countries enhancing their cooperation.

Guo Wenqing emphasized that the MCC Group, as a Fortune 500 enterprise, is the largest contractor of metallurgical construction projects in the world. Its biggest measure in the mineral industry to date is its recombination with the China Minmetals Corporation, taking on the responsibility of China’s metal mining investment and development, and distributing resources throughout the world to undertake more and larger projects. With total assets of over RMB 750 billion, the regrouped new China Minmetals Corporation will focus on establishing metal mining investment companies in order to fully develop all metal industries. Both parties expect to enjoy better communication and further cooperation in the mineral field involving such resources as copper, lead, zinc and gold, as well as bulk trade, transportation infrastructure and other fields.

Minister Byron Chen thanked Chairman Guo Wenqing for his warm reception and pointed out that the Ramu NiCo Project is a significant project for Papua New Guinea; they feel happy that the Government developed this project, and grateful to the MCC Group for its support. The project has brought abundant revenue to Papua New Guinea, provided multiple opportunities locally and promoted the economic development of adjoining provinces. Although the bulk commodity amount has remained low, this cannot lessen the significance of the Ramu Nico Project. On behalf of the Government of Papua New Guinea, they have visited the MCC Group to express their support for the Ramu Nico Project. The MCC Group has made great achievements under the leadership of President Guo Wenqing and other leaders, and they hope that the New China Minmetals Corporation will continue to take part in the world's mineral market activities and help Papua New Guinea to further develop its mineral resources in copper, lead, zinc, gold, nickel and so on, as well as taking part in the country's road transportation, municipal infrastructure and other projects.

Madang Province Governor Jim Cass expressed his gratitude for the MCC Group’s warm reception before pointing out that this visit has taught him that China has the potential that Papua New Guinea needs, and China is the best cooperation partner that Papua New Guinea could have. He hopes to further promote the implementation of the memorandum between MCC and Madang, support MCC’s development in the Province and enhance relations between China and Papua New Guinea.
