
Global Compact High Level Forum China was convened at the UN Pavilion at World Expo Shanghai 2010 on Augutst 2, 2010. The forum was jointely hosted by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and Global Compact Network China, with a theme of “Social Responsibility and Millennium Development Goal”. At the conference, a batch of Chinese enterprises was awarded with prizes for their outstanding achievements, demonstration practice, unique style and innovation. The Social Responsibility 2009 of MCC Limited won the Prize of Demonstration Practice, and Director-General Peng Huagang from Research Bureau of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of State Council awarded the prize to MCC Limited.
United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is the world's largest corporate citizenship initiative and as voluntary initiative has been widely welcomed by governments of various countries, enterprises and the public. UNGC, with over 8,000 members from more than 130 countries, has established local UNGC networks in 90 countries. It has received firm support from the State Government and all sectors of the community in China. At present, nearly 200 enterprises and organizations of China have been enrolled as members of UNGC. Global Compact Network China commits itself to: (i) encourage the Chinese enterprises to practice in accordance with the ten principles of UNGC; (ii) promote international exchage and collaboration on enterprises’ Social Responsibility by utilizing the platform of UNGC; (iii) demonstrate the latest progress on Social Responsibility achieved by Chinese enterprises; and (iv) introduce the current international trends on Social Responsibility. In this regard, Global Compact Network China has been playing an active role in promoting the development of Social Responsibility in China.
Representatives present at the forum discussed various issues related to the Global Compact, particularly implementation of the Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership, advancing the UN Millennium Development Goals and the importance of corporate sustainability in the wake of the global financial crisis. Experts and business representatives made wonderful speeches at the conference, covering various topics such as analysis on prospective of sustainable development, successful experiences of the enterprises, as well as expectation on support of environment and policies from UNGC and the governments.
